To some rock fans, music festivals are the holy grail of concerts.
There’s nothing better than getting to see favourite band after favourite band on an amazing lineup. These rock festivals take place all over the world, from North Carolina in the USA, to Germany, and even Sweden. Need something fun to do this summer? Check out some of the largest music festivals in the world below, and decide which ones are a MUST see for you.
5. Carolina Rebellion
Although this festival is on a smaller scale than many festivals taking place on other continents, the bands that play this festival in Concord, North Carolina, USA are bands you don’t wanna miss. The festival usually takes place the first weekend in May every year, and features some of rock’s biggest names. Bands that have been featured in this festival include Alter Bridge, Korn, Shinedown, Alice In Chains, Steel Panther, Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, Slipknot, Sixx:A.M., Alice Cooper, Scorpions, and many more.

4. Hellfest Open Air Festival
The Hellfest Open Air Festival, more commonly referred to as Hellfest, is a French rock and heavy metal festival that takes place in Clisson in Loire-Atlantique. The festival, like all of the festivals above, is held annually. The festival was originally known as the Fury Fest which was held in the years 2002 and 2003. Like many of the other festivals, large names in hard rock and heavy metal have played there such as Iron Maiden, ZZ Top, Slayer, Sepultura, Anthrax, and more.

3. Rock In Rio
Rock In Rio is by far one of the craziest music festivals out there, with around 1.5 million people attending the very first year. The annual festival takes place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Throughout the years, the festival has also branched out to other places in the world such as Lisbon, Portugal, Spain, and even Las Vegas in the US. The festival holds a variety of genres, ranging from rock and heavy metal to pop and indie. The very first year the festival was held was 1985. Some of the acts featured that year were Queen, AC/DC, Yes, and Rod Stewart. This festival can also be called one of the longest festivals, the first year the festival went on for ten days. Numerous artists have graced the Rock In Rio stage since 1985, including Guns N’ Roses, Prince, George Michael, Megadeth, Queensrÿche, Carlos Santana, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and too many more to name.

2. Download Festival
Another large festival across the Atlantic ocean, Download is definitely not a festival you want to miss. The Download Festival is held in Donington Park in Leicestershire, England, and similarly to Wacken, it’s held every summer. The festival made it’s debut in 2003 as a follow up to the Monsters of Rock festivals that took place in the same location between the years of 1980 and 1996. This festival has included many well known acts along the likes of Iron Maiden, Mötley Crüe, Black Sabbath, Jane’s Addiction, KISS, Slipknot, and many more.
The 15th anniversary of the festival is occurring this year, the festival will take place between the dates of June 9th and June 11th. Visit here for information on line-ups and ticket prices.
1. Wacken Open Air Festival
Every summer in the tiny village of Wacken in Schleswig-Holstein, northern Germany, the annual Wacken Open Air Festival takes place. The festival occurs over four days and hosts an average of 80,000 rocks fans per year. The festival was originally started in the year 1990 as a small festival for local German bands, but since then it has grown to extreme heights. Wacken is considered one of the largest heavy metal festivals in the world. To fully show all of you readers just how insane this festival is, all 75,000 tickets to the festival were sold within 43 hours of them being on sale for the 2014 festival. The numbers since then have only increased. If you don’t have the funds and/or opportunity to head to northern Germany to see this epic festival, you can still join in on the insanity and fun as numerous bands have recorded live CDs and DVD’s there, including the likes of Alice Cooper, Judas Priest, Twisted Sister, Deep Purple, Heaven & Hell, and many more.
This year (2017), the festival will take place Thursday August 3 to Sunday August 5. Check out the Wacken website for information on line-ups and ticket prices.
