Even if you’re new to the music world, you probably know that networking is the foundation of the industry. No matter how good you are, if you don’t know someone, you probably won’t ever get to show off your true talents. But how do you network? The basics are a lot more simple than you might think.
Step One: Social Media
This is probably the easiest way to connect with people. Comment on other band’s YouTube videos, follow some venues on facebook, and interact with fans on Twitter. You never know who knows somebody who can get you a gig, or even who’s really important in your local scene. Sometimes that guy or girl you’re just having a simple convo with can turn out to be a promoter or manager looking for a new act!
Step Two: Become a Regular
Go to shows! I can’t stress this enough. By showing your face and socializing, you’re putting yourself out there and showing everyone that you’re friendly and open to working with new people. You’ll come to be known around the scene, which is also great because the people you’re making friends with can easily be converted to fans in your own audience when you perform.
Step Three: Reach Out
You never know unless you try! Asking around for internship or job opportunities is a great way to get involved in the other side of the industry. There’s no better way to learn how to improve your own band than to become one of the people you’re trying to attract and impress. Plus, instant connections!
Obviously, becoming successful in your local scene and beyond is a lot more complicated than these three steps, but I can assure you that they can’t hurt your chances. By simply becoming a well-known, friendly fixture in your local music industry, your band will likely flourish. But it’s all up to you!
