My Hero: 20 Years Of Foo Fighters' The Colour & The Shape

Posted by Sydney Taylor on

May 20th, 2017 marked the 20th anniversary of the American rock band, Foo Fighters, second studio album, The Colour & The Shape (1997).

This record is often looked at as a debut of the overall band, as the very first Foo Fighters record was recorded primarily by frontman, Dave Grohl. They say lightning doesn’t strike in the same place twice, but this doesn’t apply to Grohl, who found success with both the Foo Fighters, and his previous band, Nirvana, which had dissolved after the suicide of frontman Kurt Cobain.

Some of the biggest songs released by the band are featured on this record. Such as, “Everlong”, “My Hero”, and “Monkey Wrench.”

The album was nominated for Best Rock Album at the 1998 Grammy Awards, and is the Foo Fighters best selling album in the United States.

It’s been said that the inspiration for the lyrics on this record was the divorce between Grohl and his ex-wife, Jennifer Youngblood, who had separated in 1996.

Grohl has since released what a majority of the songs are about. One of the biggest songs, “Monkey Wrench” was described by Grohl as, “a song about realizing that you are the source of all of the problems in a relationship and you love the other person so much, you want to free them of the problem, which is actually yourself. It was a riff that turned into another riff and ended up being a nice little power punk song.”

Grohl also spoke about another single from the album, “My Hero.” “A way of saying that when I was young, I didn’t have big rock heroes. I didn’t want to grow up and be some big sporting hero. My heroes were ordinary people and that people that I have a lot respect for are just solid everyday people--people you can rely on.”

Grohl says a lot of the songs revolve around feelings that he had throughout the divorce.

The album was re-released in 2007 to celebrate the ten year anniversary of the record. We’re left wondering if another release will be announced in celebration of the twentieth anniversary.
