Two X chromosomes walk into a music store…
And attempt to go about their business buying whatever it is that they came for.
If you were waiting for a funny punchline, you’ll be waiting forever, because the only punchline you’ll be getting here is in the gut. Women have just as much of a right to shop in a music store as men, and they should be able to do so without question.
Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case.
If you’re a woman, think about the last time you had to go get some new strings or even a new instrument (lucky you!). I’ll bet you remember the stares, the way you might have felt a bit uncomfortable under everyone’s scrutiny. You could probably hear their thoughts…
Oh, she’s probably new here.
I’ll bet she just tries to play that thing to impress guys.
She’s too pretty to be able to play well.
I should offer to show her how to do that cool riff that always impresses the ladies.
Granted, some guys don’t think like this at all, and some women are perfectly comfortable in their native music shops. But this can’t be said for the majority, and this is not okay. Everyone should be able to go buy equipment without having condescending salespeople assuming their ignorance based on gender or outward appearance. Unfortunately, women are still the minority in the music industry, and therefore, there might not be enough of us to destroy the stigma. But that can’t stop us from trying.Ladies, next time you walk into a music store, do it with confidence. You belong there as much as anyone else.
And guys, you too, but just don’t forget to be mindful of your fellow musicians, no matter what their gender, age, orientation, or appearance!
