The lights in the theatre grew dim, a single light illuminating the face of the maestro as he stood on the stairs leading to the stage, his fingers touching the fretboard of his blonde Fender Stratocaster, giving his audience the first taste of what was to come.
Last week I attended Yngwie Malmsteen’s show at The Chance Theater in Poughkeepsie, NY. The tour he’s currently embarking on is entitled the World On Fire 2017 Tour, in relation to his latest record release, World on Fire (2016).
The show kicked off with the opening track of Malmsteen’s Odyssey (1988), written by Malmsteen and former Rainbow vocalist Joe Lynn Turner, “Rising Force.” Smoke flooded the stage, revealing Malmsteen in a picturesque image. His energy onstage was palpable immediately as he took over the stage, kicking picks into the audience with his leather boots.
His great wall of Marshall amplifiers stood high above him, blasting the audience with sound. I heard someone say after the show that they counted 49 heads, but the world may never know. The show was fit with many of Yngwie’s signature tricks. Throwing his guitar over his shoulder, spinning the guitar itself in a Pete Townshend type fashion; Yngwie even managed to make the feedback from laying his guitar face down on a speaker sound great.
He shredded his way through both classic tunes, and insane intense guitar solos, showcasing his speed and technical skill that he has cultivated from numerous years of playing his neoclassical style.
As well as seeing Malmsteen’s amazing tricks and outstanding musicianship, I also saw the full-fledged reactions of metal fanboys. I had never seen teenage boys “fan-girling” as hard as I did last night in the front row. Their fists and “horn” hand gestures being thrown in the air at alarming speed with every step Yngwie took toward them; Yngwie seemed to feed off of their energy.
Along with Yngwie’s shredding arpeggios, Malmsteen’s current band made up of Ralph Ciavolino on bass, Mark Ellis on drums, and Nick Marino on keyboards made the night even more interesting, as Ciavolino, Marino, and Yngwie took turns on vocals on songs like “Rising Force”, “Seventh Time”, “Soldier”, and “Heaven Tonight.”
The only disappointing or annoying feature of the night was sound difficulties from the venue; which wasn’t the band’s fault. Standing directly by a speaker, the periodic cracking and squeaking was frustrating, and seemed to also be frustrating the band as well. But, not every show or venue will have the perfect or best sound, and that’s okay. The show was terrific nonetheless.
If you’ve never seen the shredmaster, I’d definitely recommend going to a show. It was my first time seeing Yngwie, and as a guitarist it was incredibly mind-blowing to see the talent he possesses, now even thirty years later.
